Abstract

A pressure relief assembly for a steel can battery cell includes a discrete burst disc sub-assembly welded or otherwise joined over an opening in a can wall or lid. The burst disc includes a thin metallic membrane engineered to rupture at a specified design pressure. The joint around the opening forms a hermetic seal and is configured to remain intact during venting so that pressure relief occurs by membrane rupture rather than joint failure. The burst disc may be placed on any face of the enclosure, including top, bottom, or side walls, enabling flexible vent orientation. In some embodiments, the opening is an electrolyte fill port such that the same burst disc both seals the fill port after electrolyte filling and provides pressure relief. Burst pressure characteristics may be controlled via burst disc geometry and thickness independently of can wall fabrication.
