Abstract
Disclosed is a volumetric display comprising many small addressable elements fixed at known three dimensional positions within a transparent solid body. Each addressable element responds to a broadcast message that carries a multi field address and a color or state field, and each element acts only on messages matching its own address. The color or state field defines color, intensity, and duration, so an element may be commanded to a state and hold that state. Disclosed forms include elements that emit visible light to form an image, elements that darken on command from a substantially transparent rest state to provide occlusion, and elements that combine both functions. Disclosed methods of delivering power and addressing to the fixed elements include power and data carried by non visible light flooding the transparent body, and power and data carried by transparent conductive lines formed within the body. Disclosed methods of fabrication include additive manufacturing of the transparent body with the addressable elements and any conductive lines formed in place.
