Abstract
SPVTS-1 is a passive urine–air separation system designed to replace fan-driven separators in spacecraft toilets. It uses a vortex-based phase separation approach combined with adaptive air preflush and capillary-assisted startup to maintain performance across a wide flow range.
The system targets ≤1.2% air entrainment while reducing mechanical complexity, power use, and maintenance requirements.
