Abstract

This technical evaluation presents the Interactive Digital Vinyl System (IDVS) and the IDVS+, a sensor-based Digital Vinyl System (DVS) control vinyl that adds a rotating touchscreen interface for direct, on-deck control of DJ and music software.

The IDVS+ is a 12-inch, battery-powered device that operates without a stylus, continuously measures its own rotation via internal motion sensors, and transmits motion data wirelessly to a connected computer, DJ player, or smartphone, where the audio is generated and played back. In addition to standard DVS behavior (speed control, forward and reverse movement, and scratching), the IDVS+ introduces a high-resolution touchscreen surface capable of displaying track information and interactive user interfaces while rotating, including optional visual counter-rotation to keep UI elements readable and operable. The system is bidirectional: the host application sends cover art, metadata, waveforms, and parameter states to the device, while the IDVS+ returns motion and touch input for real-time processing. The document outlines UI “function modes” for playback visualization and software control, including library navigation, track selection, cue points, effects, equalizer, and key control. It also discusses future variants (standalone playback with wireless audio, cloud-controlled DJ software, and social connectivity features) and evaluates feasibility using current state-of-the-art components (touch displays, wireless protocols, sensors, and power). Key engineering challenges are identified, including latency, rotation horizon calibration and drift management, touch interaction during rotation, weight and inertia constraints for turntablism, robustness in live use, thermal behavior, electromagnetic interference, and multi-device coexistence.
