Abstract

Piezo-electric devices are widely used, in static as well as dynamic applications. This invention disclosure is concerned with dynamic applications, that involve the use of a piezo stack. A piezo stack is an electro-mechanical device that converts electrical in mechanical energy or vice versa. It is characterized by one or more resonance frequencies that depend on the physical properties of the piezo stack. However, these properties depend on how the piezo stack is configured exactly. Since this configuration can be changed ‘on the fly’ (i.e., during operation), we can use one single piezo stack to operate at different resonance frequencies. This is commercially relevant to the oil & gas industry, where piezo stack devices are used as acoustic sources in fluid-filled boreholes and where variation in source resonance frequency is desirable, in order to cope with the constant variation in borehole transfer functions as a result of formation changes. In this way, we can cover a broader frequency band with one single source.
