Abstract

Determination of the amount of wear on a downhole tool’s body at the rig site is necessary for certain downhole tools in order to decide if the measurement instrument needs to be re-calibrated. A slot with steadily increasing depth (tilted slot) is suggested to replace the previously used series of holes of different depth. By making the slot long enough, i.e. the angle shallow, the problem of gauging small depth differences is transformed into a relatively coarse measurement of length differences. Said method can for example be applied to all nuclear logging while drilling (LWD) tools, especially the gamma density measurement tools.
