Abstract

Media routing from mobile devices to devices such as earbuds, headphones, speakers, TVs, etc. is fragmented, leading to issues such as misrouting, high development and maintenance overhead, inconsistent behaviors, missing features, etc. This disclosure describes techniques to unify media and call routing across media handling components of a mobile operating system. A graph structure is implemented to manage the sources and destinations of media. The graph structure enables precise yet flexible routing of media to devices within a user’s device ecosystem. A single source of system-wide routing information makes media routing robust, intuitive, and immersive. A flexible and scalable architecture enables seamless integration of new devices and media types. Context-aware routing enables real-time and personalized routing choices. The techniques seamlessly integrate different types of media streams, media input/output devices of various types, and streaming technologies, and devices with personal/shared ownership.
