Abstract

Digital maps provide route guidance based on attributes such as time to destination, cost, etc. However, current route options do not take into account difficulty associated with driving a particular route or the skill level of a user. This document describes techniques for presenting users with routing options that take into account the driving difficulty for the route. The difficulty of a route is based on a number of factors, including the number of unprotected turns, traffic conditions, etc. The aggregate difficulty for various routes can be used to select, sort, and present routing options to the user of digital maps. The difficulty level for a route can be adjusted based on seasonality, traffic patterns, etc. time of day, day of week, month, season, and even the year. With user permission, route recommendation is tailored to the user's driving skill level. The described techniques can provide users with routing options that provide a pleasant, comfortable, and reliable driving experience.
