Abstract
The present disclosure relates to differentiating between line and path faults to prevent sympathetic protection switches in cascaded protection networks, in Optical Transport Network (OTN). The approach differentiates between faults at the line layer and faults at the service / path layer before triggering a protection switch or turning off a client laser. It also does not require any specific functionality / overhead (such as Tandem Connection Monitors (TCMs), which exist only in OTN networks) or proprietary / special signaling or communications between any components of the system.
