Abstract

This publication describes techniques and systems to implement independently controllable black level voltage in digital-to-analog converter circuits for active-matrix flat-panel display driving circuits, such as AMOLED driving circuits used in portable electronic devices. Active-matrix flat-panel driving circuits include digital-to-analog converter (DAC) circuits that generally use the black luminance voltage level as a reference for the other gray levels of the DAC circuit. However, such displays can suffer from optical artifacts such as image retention and motion blur artifacts if the black luminance voltage level is set to a high level. Lowering the black luminance voltage, on the other hand, causes the other gray level voltages to also decrease, which may lead to other undesirable optical artifacts. The techniques and systems described herein provide for control of black luminance-level voltages independently of the other gray-level voltages to mitigate such optical artifacts in the display.
