Abstract

This publication describes techniques and systems to implement a smart automatic frame insertion procedure for active-matrix flat-panel displays, such as AMOLED displays in portable electronic devices. Active-matrix displays can suffer from image retention in which ghost images of previously displayed images may persist on the screen. Techniques such as early-exit and automatic frame insertion are currently utilized to mitigate image retention issues. However, these techniques cause excessive power consumption in certain use cases. The techniques and systems described herein apply a blocking time to the automatic frame insertion procedure such that automatic frame insertion is blocked until some amount of time transpires without an image update occurring. By so doing, the techniques and systems conserve power by avoiding the power consumption caused by conventional automatic frame insertion.
