Abstract

This solution allows the feature “contention-based ranging” to be scalable (i.e., to work properly regardless of the density of users), based on 3 complementary improvements:

1) By allowing only a subset of Responders to participate to a given ranging round, the Controller does not need to increase the number of slots in the CAP, as the density of users increases. This enables to maintain the same level of distance measurement accuracy, while limiting the risk of collisions.

2) The Controller may conversely increase the size of the CAP as much as desired, unlike in current FiRa specifications.

3) The Controller may further limit the risk of collisions by deciding whether data transfer is allowed or not during a given ranging round.
