Abstract

Stop-start driving impedes traffic flow and wastes energy and time. This disclosure describes techniques for improving traffic flow efficiency and energy consumption by reducing stop-and-go vehicle driving. The techniques leverage a combination of available data sources, e.g., traffic light timing history, crowdsourced traffic observations, traffic light observations from in-vehicle cameras, digital maps data, velocity information, locations of synchronized traffic lights, etc., to predict the traffic light timing along a route and suggest routes that optimize the number of stops along the route. The techniques create a smooth, more efficient traffic flow using a data–driven approach, while prioritizing safety and accounting for vehicle type and driver preferences.
