Abstract

Performance measurement solutions typically probe a network to detect service degradation within the network. Measurements between two nodes in the network (typically referred to as nodes 'P' and 'Q') are often performed using a measurement session created on P that generates probe packets towards Q. However, there is often limited capacity for the number of performance measurement sessions that can be created for network devices. In order to address such issues, this proposal provides techniques through which the most critical (P, Q) that should be measured for a network can be determined. A network controller can learn a next hop ranking for a network router and generate a list of the highest next hop nodes for which measurement sessions should be configured.
