Abstract

A general trend among Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices is the bifurcation between 2 forms of walk-up user interfaces. The vast majority would be highly simplified (with indicator lights and buttons), while premium devices provide for increasingly large touchscreen controls. The choice of the majority is possible due to the ability of mobile computing devices such as Smartphones, to host apps that serve as a full-featured user interface, not just for 1 device, but for an entire device family. This enables significant cost savings at the device portfolio level, while enhancing usability.
