Abstract

The present disclosure relates to discrete node turn-up in a non-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) managed optical line system. On a discretely-controlled, non-ASE managed line system, an individual node that requires a given spectrum condition, detects if the input spectrum is meeting the criteria to proceed with calibration, sends a request to the originating node to generate ASE or homogenous spectrum, and proceeds with sequential calibration and keeping the source open until the full section is calibrated. In addition, a controller can detect if the Optical Multiplex Section (OMS) is turning up for the first-time, by comparing a first-time flag status with immediate upstream node-controller and avoids additional overhead messaging with upstream controllers.
