Abstract

Many public domain digital information systems allow guest users to view information, access shared hardware such as printers, etc. However, such access does not take into account user preferences such as font/text size or language for information display, printing preferences, etc. This provides a suboptimal experience to users, e.g., that may not read the displayed language, may prefer larger or smaller text, etc. This disclosure describes the use of a mobile device to provide user preferences via a token that encodes the user preferences. The token is broadcast by the mobile device and the information is received by a public or shared device. With user permission, the public device accesses information encoded in the token and personalizes the user experience of using the public device. For example, a digital menu can update font size and other display parameters, a shared printer can enable two-sided printing, etc.
