Abstract

Paper Amount Metering Systems (also called Media Stack Height Measurement, in the specific case of Cut Sheet Trays), rely on some form of sensing system, that interacts either directly, or indirectly, with the amount of paper present for the Media Source, be it Roll, or Cut Sheets. The most critical function of such Metering Systems is to be able to give advanced warning, that media is about to run out (which is known as Low-on-Paper (LoP) or Low-Remaining-Paper-On-Roll), rather than the more legacy ability to sense Out-of-Paper (OoP). This is especially useful for remote printing cases, where users are not situated close to the Printing Device, and therefore, need to make decisions as to whether to intervene to add more media prior to printing, or just go ahead to trigger a job without intervening.
