Abstract
A distributed Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) traffic-engineering technique is proposed herein that reuses Resource Reservation Protocol - Traffic Engineering (RSVPTE)- style distributed path computation and signaling to establish traffic-engineered switched paths. Instead of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) labels, each node allocates an IPv6 link-local address as a locally significant forwarding identifier for a label switched path (LSP) segment. A transit node matches an incoming interface and destination IPv6 link-local address, rewrites the destination address to the next per-hop link-local address, and forwards the packet through the selected outgoing interface. The resulting IPv6-native path resembles MPLS label swapping while using scoped IPv6 linklocal addresses as per-hop switching identifiers.
