Abstract

A system for coding Gaussian splats with standard image and video codecs is disclosed. Splats are placed on a two-dimensional grid and each attribute channel becomes a plane with one sample per splat at the same location in every plane. A standard encoder codes the planes, as video for sequences, with quantizers that can differ per channel and per region. The decoder gathers each splat's samples from the same location in every plane, dequantizes them, and renders the splats. Rendering-equivalent choices including canonical axis labelling, reference rotation, sign selection, predicted values for never-rendered splats, and coding-efficient ordering require no decoder-side reversal. Each stream signals its own inter-channel transform with exact integer inversion, and a signalled layout maps channels to streams, tiles, and codecs.
