Abstract

Decision. For each block period the receiver decides “playable” or “not playable” from its own check of that block only: no block received, a block shorter than the plan, an error-correcting codeword it cannot correct, a keyed tag that fails after correction, the first passing block after any failure (the re-arm rule), a block naming another configuration, or, in detect-only modes, a group whose own parity fails. No error rate, threshold, hold time, signal strength or soft-decision value enters the decision. Frozen decoder. For every group that is not decoded, the sub-band ADPCM decoder outputs zeros and changes no state: band predictors, histories and step sizes, the synthesis filter bank, emphasis memories and stereo statistics all stay as they were. Convergence. Every block carries, inside the error-correcting codeword and under the tag, a 5-bit field holding one band’s quantised step size (band = block number mod 8); both ends apply it in every block, the encoder snapping its own step to the value it sends. With the stereo side information carried in every block’s protected descriptor and leaky adaptation of every state variable, a decoder that resumes from its frozen state is pulled back onto the encoder’s without any after-loss mode.
