Abstract

The capture of tacit knowledge in organizations may be hindered by friction associated with manual documentation. A decentralized system can address this by providing each user with a personal knowledge repository (PKR) hosted on a shared, searchable file system. A local software agent, operating on a user's computing device (e.g., a laptop, smartphone, or wearable device), can populate the PKR through explicit commands or passive monitoring of work activities, with user consent. This agent can also directly query the PKRs of other users across a peer-to-peer network to retrieve information. The system can provide a method for accessing distributed information, distributing computational load across end-user devices, and managing security through standard file system permissions. This approach may reduce the complexity and resource overhead of certain centralized knowledge management services.
