Abstract
Systems and methods extend the Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) to support an Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) Flexible Algorithm (Flex-Algo). A Forwarding Equivalence Class (FEC) is redefined as a composite key based on an Internet Protocol (IP) prefix together with an algorithm identifier, and the composite key is carried in a Flex-Algo Prefix FEC Element within an LDP Label Mapping message. A router allocates and advertises multiple distinct local labels for the same destination prefix, with each label mapped to a different IGP algorithm. LDP peers negotiate Flex-Algo support during session establishment using a capability indication carried in an LDP Initialization message, which preserves backward compatibility with legacy peers. The IGP computes a best path for each combination of a prefix and an algorithm, and a router installs outgoing labels accordingly, enabling traffic to the same destination prefix to follow different algorithm-specific paths.
