Abstract
This disclosure describes a proactive traffic engineering recovery mechanism for Resource Reservation Protocol - Traffic Engineering (RSVP-TE) tunnels based on physical-layer link degradation indicators, such as cyclic redundancy check (CRC) errors. Existing RSVP-TE and transport control-plane mechanisms generally react only after hard failures, such as link-down events, loss of signal, Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) timeout, or RSVP signaling timeout. However, high-speed optical and packet networks may experience soft failures in which a link remains operationally up while packet corruption or error rates increase due to fiber degradation, dirty connectors, optic issues, or other physical-layer impairments. In such cases, traffic continues to use the degraded link, resulting in packet loss and application degradation before conventional protection mechanisms are triggered.
