Abstract

The paper describes systems and structures providing built-in electromagnetic shielding for capacitors in high-performance computing platforms. As power modules increase in size and current density, decoupling capacitors are positioned near inductors, which can lead to increased coupled noise from switching currents. To address this, a capacitor design incorporates a conductive foil wrapped around the capacitor, an enclosure added over the capacitor, or an enclosure over an array of capacitors. This configuration provides electromagnetic shielding, thereby reducing coupled noise from high-switching rails to sensitive rails and delivering a cleaner power supply voltage.

Keywords: electromagnetic shielding, ceramic capacitor, vertical power module, decoupling capacitor, coupled noise, power delivery network.
