Abstract

A modular architecture for data storage devices is described that decouples the electronic control circuitry from the electro-mechanical storage assembly. The architecture utilizes two separate modules: a logic sled and a sealed media cartridge. The logic sled contains the active processing and driving components, while the sealed media cartridge houses the mechanical storage elements and specific calibration data. A compression connector links the two modules, facilitating field-repairability, simplified data recovery, and interface upgrades without discarding the storage media. This modular approach mitigates electronic waste and enhances the adaptability of magnetic storage systems.
