Abstract

Media consumption by a user may be restricted to a linear playback of a media content item (e.g., a movie, a television show, etc.). In addition, or in the alternative, media consumption by a user may be restricted to playback of a media content item (e.g., a movie, a television show, etc.) that is manually segmented by episode. The linear playback and/or the manual segmentation may present challenges for users interested in specific character arcs, experiences, or plotlines within multi-narrative media content. Following a single narrative thread in multi-narrative media content may currently involve the manual navigation of the user through the multi-narrative media content. The manual navigation may often result in a disjointed user experience and the loss of critical context for character arcs, experiences, or plotlines from scenes in the media content item where a character is discussed but not present in a scene.

The disclosed technology may automatically generate character-centric narrative streams using a multimodal analysis of video and audio tracks of the media content item. The character-centric narrative streams may be semantic supercuts of a specific narrative thread in multi-narrative media content that is automatically curated and generated while maintaining plot coherency. One or more narrative units identified in a multi-narrative media content item may be indexed and tagged with metadata representing both visual presence and semantic relevance of the narrative unit to the specific character or theme of interest to the user. Upon selecting a specific character or theme within the media content item, relevant narrative units may be identified, retrieved, and stitched into a continuous playback queue creating a supercut version of the multi-narrative media content item. In some implementations, narrative gaps between narrative units may be identified. The disclosed technology may generate and insert bridging summaries, such as text overlays or generated video and audio clips, into the character-centric narrative stream to maintain plot continuity. The disclosed technology allows for the curation of coherent, non-linear subplots and enables the granular acquisition of specific narrative arcs for characters or plotlines.
