Abstract

This disclosure describes a scalable approach for supporting Ethernet OAM, including ITU-T Y.1731 performance monitoring, on Passive Optical Network (PON) Optical Network Units (ONUs) using a single MAC address. The approach anchors downstream Maintenance Association End Points (MEPs) logically at the PON interface, allowing all unicast Y.1731 messages for multiple Ethernet services to use the ONU PON MAC as a common destination address. By extending existing ITU-T G.988 Dot1ag MEP configuration to associate a MEP with the ANI-G entity, and by leveraging the standardized ONU Manufacturing Data Managed Entity for MAC address discovery, the approach avoids per-service MAC address allocation and eliminates the need for CCM-based MAC learning in lightweight Y.1731 deployments. The solution operates within existing Y.1731 and G.988 frameworks, supports VLAN-specific and VLAN-agnostic MEPs, scales with increasing service counts, and enables efficient delay and loss monitoring across customer, access, and aggregation network domains without increasing MAC address consumption or implementation complexity.
