Abstract
The present disclosure is directed to a protocol-agnostic fast-failover mechanism for IPv4 and IPv6 networks designed to address the inherent lack of rapid reconvergence. The present disclosure may enhance network resilience by pre-calculating and pre-installing a backup, or backup route, into a router's forwarding information base (FIB) alongside a primary route. In the event of a primary route failure, a router can be configured to switch traffic to the backup route almost instantaneously, thereby bypassing the conventional, time-consuming process of route recalculation and installation. This approach can significantly minimize packet loss and service disruption.
