Abstract
This document discloses a method and apparatus for recording spatial sound using a multichannel microphone array based on the acoustic principles of the Crown® SASS (Stereo Ambient Sampling System), but extended to cover the entire 360° horizontal plane and optionally the upper hemisphere. The disclosed system, named MASS (Multi-channel Ambient Sample System), employs flush-mounted omnidirectional microphone capsules arranged on multiple planar surfaces of a cabinet, with acoustic baffling to control interchannel separation and diffraction. This disclosure is intentionally placed in the public domain to establish prior art, thereby preventing others from obtaining patent protection for this class of microphone systems and enabling open development of compatible designs.
