Abstract

Handling congestion on an inter-switch link (ISL) port in a fibre channel (FC) fabric is not specifically addressed in current FC standards. Further, strictly following current standards can result in sending Fabric Performance Impact Notification (FPIN) signaling to endpoints that may not be contributing to ISL congestion. In order to address such issues, techniques are proposed herein that provide for efficiently handling ISL congestion using storage area network (SAN) analytics to accurately determine the flows that are causing ISL congestion and generating FPIN-Congestion Notification (FPIN-CN) messages that can be sent to the endpoints originating the flows causing congestion. The FPIN-CN messages can trigger mitigation actions by host bus adapters (HBAs) of the endpoints to help mitigate the ISL congestion.
