Abstract

Print jobs, especially those involving printing images or non-standard text documents, can consume large amounts of ink resulting in a substantial expense that the user may be unaware of. This disclosure describes artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to optimize printer ink usage. An AI model is trained using a dataset of various types of print jobs, printers, and printer settings, and corresponding ink usage patterns. When a user sends a print job to the printer, the trained AI model is utilized to generate a prediction of ink usage. Depending on the type of print job, the AI model also generates alternatives for reduced ink usage, e.g., color-reversed printing, grayscale printing, reduced color intensity, etc. Prior to sending the print job to the printer, the user is provided with previews of alternatives, differences between original and ink-optimized print jobs, ink usage for each alternative, etc.
