Abstract

Described herein are systems and methods of shaping sheet metal (e.g., by hemming, bending, roll forming, etc.) with stress superposition. Stress superposition is the process of adding additional stresses onto a particular forming process to increase forming limits. As such, the systems and methods described herein include the addition of compressive stress during the shaping by applying a compressive force by counteracting a roll-forming (or other shaping) die.
