Abstract
Many users have smart homes that connect the electronic devices in their homes to the internet or to a home network so that the electronic devices may interact with one another. A user may control, use, and/or monitor the electronic devices by way of an application that may run on one or more computing devices of the user. For example, the computing device of the user may include but is not limited to a smart television (TV), a tablet computer, a smart phone, a laptop computer, a mobile computing device, and a desktop computing device. The computing device of the user may be connected to a network (e.g., a home network) and interfaced to the internet. The electronic devices may include, but are not limited to, smart TVs, smart thermostats, smart doorbells, smart locks, smart lighting, smart light bulbs, smart plugs, smart speakers, smart cameras, smart appliances, smart home security systems, smart garage door control systems, etc. The application may be a smart home application.
The smart home application may interface with each electronic device in a home of a user that is connected to the home network. Each electronic device may undergo an authentication process when first connecting to the home network. The authentication process may ensure that the connecting of the electronic device to the home network and the interfacing of the electronic device with the smart home application are performed with the consent of the user. Ensuring user consent may mitigate the potential risks associated with unauthorized access to the home network and smart home application of the user by a malicious actor. In addition, or in the alternative, by ensuring user consent the user may safely move or relocate the electronic device from one physical location for the electronic device to another.
