Abstract
This disclosure describes techniques for providers of distributed computing services to utilize idle computing resources associated with user devices. With user permission and express consent, software is installed on available user device(s) that can enable creation of a virtual environment on each user device. The virtual environment on the user device is configured such that the user has no visibility into data associated with the data center usage, and the data center operator has no visibility and/or access to user data that is stored on the user device. When a computational workload is received, it is determined by a data center controller whether processing of the workload is to be performed at one of the compute clusters located within the data center or whether the execution of the workload is to be performed at a user device that can be accessed by the data center.
