Abstract
The invention is a method of combining simulation and real-time data processing to lower wear and fatigue on drilling tools by actively adjusting steering parameters in real-time. The idea is to use finite-element drill string simulation for calculating the bending moment distribution at every position of the bottom hole assembly (BHA) with the actual load conditions. Additionally, using a drill-ahead simulation, the most probable following path can be calculated. Using the current steer forces, the current survey data and the calculated most probable survey data, the finite-element drill string simulation can be used to simulate what bending moment will result out of this new survey. Further, the idea is to simulate the most probable further survey, as far as possible to be able to simulate the bending moment at every position of the BHA, when passing through that new section.
