Abstract
Many mobile devices have codec implementations of relatively low quality due to limited die area, cost considerations, and (compared to laptops or other computers) less powerful central processing units (CPUs) that can struggle to execute software codecs. This disclosure describes techniques to improve the upload quality of a mobile device by leveraging (with user permission) more powerful devices on the same wireless network as the mobile device. Specifically, when a mobile device is on the same wireless network as a more powerful device, the hardware or software codecs available on the more powerful device are used to encode content from the mobile device in a manner transparent to the user. The higher quality, low bitrate content can be returned from the more powerful device to the mobile device application and can be uploaded to content platforms.
