Abstract

There are many types of media compatible with Inkjet and latex printers, ranging from low-cost media for basic applications to high-cost media for premium applications. As a result, managing media in customer facilities, selecting the appropriate media, and entering media settings during the printer setup process is a cost-sensitive operation that requires significant human effort and is prone to errors.

Furthermore, media rolls with few meters remaining are in the practice discarded to avoid reaching the end of the media while Printing, generating a waste and an expense that could be reduced with a more sophisticated media management that the current annotations in the roll edges.

What we propose is a gadget to facilitate the media management, selection and print mode configuration using intelligent caps attached to the media roll with the information of media (remaining length, properties, special print modes supported by this media substrate, etc).

This proposal is based on a RFID tag attached to a roll cap that placed in the media roll is robust to the paper core manipulation and damage, main problem when the RFID tag is placed in the media core and does not requires any media manufacturer process to include the RFID during manufacturing process.
