Abstract

Labyrinth seals play a crucial role in shaft sealing applications in protecting bearings and preventing contamination. However, they tend to have high leakage values which negatively impact compressor efficiency. This proposed solution eliminates the seal and makes the clearance between thrust collar and seal plate big enough to have a controlled leakage. The leakage is used to cool the bearings.
