Abstract

When a user participates in a video conference while wearing a virtual reality headset or other head-mounted device, inward facing cameras and sensors of the device are used to obtain data that, together with a face model of the user, can be used to provide an animated avatar of the user as the user’s video in the video conference. However, this video needs to be depicted on a virtual background since video data about the user’s real environment is not available. This disclosure describes a headset with rear-facing and/or side-facing cameras or other sensors that, with user permission, capture images of the user’s environment. The images are used to render a background for the user’s avatar that has the properties of the real environment of the user. Sensors can also be used to detect real-world lighting conditions and to provide lighting and shadow effects for the user’s avatar.
