Abstract
Software monetization has traditionally supported device locked licenses. With the consumerization of IT, there is an expectation of B2C like experiences to be available in the B2B space – and with it the expectation is that the license is tied to a user and not with a device.
With the user-based licensing, now this is possible wherein the license is not tied to the device, though users are being authorized to access the software license from any device, using their credentials.
Here, the ISV is responsible for license generation of software products sold to customer, and the end-user access management is delegated to the customer administrator user, who will decide “who can access what”.
Problem in existing solution
With the advent of UBL, end-user can access product license from any device, which provides flexibility to both customer admin user and end-users.
However, on the other hand, it also brings challenges, in scenarios where the admin user or ISV wants this flexibility along with location-based access control.
