Abstract

Due to its limited bandwidth and high cost per packet, satellite communication over mobile devices is used as a last resort for emergency communications when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. Currently, users need to predefine (preset) the contacts with whom they want emergency messages or location information to be shared. However, a user may not be aware of the requirement to predefine their emergency contacts or may forget to do so. A user that has not configured a preset emergency contact list may be unable to utilize the satellite communication facility to send out messages. This disclosure describes techniques that automatically notify users when they are approaching areas with no cellular coverage to prompt them to set up emergency contacts. The techniques can advantageously be integrated into a device operating system and/or digital map application.
