Abstract
Providing wireless network connectivity in a large physical facility requires deploying a large number of centrally managed wireless access points (APs) distributed throughout the facility. This is costly, since each device has to be purchased, installed, configured, and maintained. Many facilities include fixed wired devices, such as desktop computers that are centrally managed and are capable of acting as wireless hotspots. This disclosure describes techniques that leverage central management features to automatically configure fixed wired devices in a physical facility as wireless hotspots. Per the techniques, the fixed wireless devices are automatically configured with hotspot settings and are controlled via an enterprise policy. The devices provide wireless coverage in their vicinity, reducing the need for wireless APs.
