Abstract

With a growing demand for smart utility networks, flexibility, manageability and reliability of deployments is highly desirable. Several vendors are moving towards battery operated sensors or metering devices that can provide flexibility and reduced hardware cost for smart utility networks. As the reliability of these endpoints depend on battery life, novel mechanisms are proposed herein that provides for optimizing and reducing battery consumption of battery-operated endpoints by considering real time parameters, such as signal strength for the communication link to a parent node and polling schedules of an endpoint management server.
