Abstract

In an instrumented application, telemetry data may be collected and displayed. During transit from the instrumented application to an observability platform, the telemetry data may make multiple hops from service to service in a complex pipeline, which may lead to the loss of some telemetry data. Techniques described herein solve the telemetry data loss problem by detecting, pinpointing, and quantifying the loss of data. The techniques address specific use cases of telemetry, such as data sampling and batching. The techniques enable identification of problems at underlying collectors in the observability pipeline.
