Abstract

Techniques are presented herein that support an additional control data path for a pluggable module that employs the module’s Vcc power pins. Adding a signal modulation path to a pluggable module’s Vcc power delivery and then using the same as a management communication interface provides a form-factor agnostic approach to expand a module’s management channel. Such a data path can operate in addition to the Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) interface communication lines to support the sending of larger amounts of data at cumulatively faster speeds. Additionally, the presented techniques provide an approach to backward compatibility that will be tolerable by older form factor modules and future form factors. Further, such an approach decreases the risk that may be associated with implementing new equipment.
