Abstract

Today, when a user receives a quick-response (QR) code in a messaging channel (e.g., email, chat), there is no information visible in the QR code to enable the user to make an informed decision about whether or not to scan the QR code. Rather, to read the content of a QR code, the user needs to use a secondary device (such as a smartphone) equipped with a QR code scanner/camera or a secondary application on a personal computer (PC) or laptop, which can expose the user to unsolicited information and possible threats. Presented herein are techniques through which metadata associated with a QR code may be provided via a QR code animation. The metadata can be detected, extracted, and presented to a user without the need of a secondary device/application, which can enable the user to make an informed decision regarding whether to scan the code.
