Abstract

The evolving Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11bn amendment (and subsequent amendments thereof) to the 802.11 standards is anticipated to define a multi-access point coordination (MAPC) spatial reuse (SR) mechanism that can be utilized between access points (APs) for opportunistic transmit opportunity (TXOP) operations in which each shared TXOP is expected to begin with an over-the-air (OTA) exchange of queue statistics for each Basic Service Set (BSS) (e.g., statistics per Traffic Identifier (TID)) between a leader AP and follower APs in a coordination group (CG). Such queue statistics are often referred to as an AP Queue Report (AQRP). This exchange can be operationally expensive if applied to every TXOP (as implied by the design proposed to the crafters of the 802.11bn amendment) and, alternatively, usage of historical data can be too coarse for MAPC scheduling. Presented herein are techniques through which an efficient transfer of buffer queue status can be facilitated between APs by piggybacking the status using OTA messages that are currently utilized for other Wi-Fi communications, such as beacons, unsolicited probe responses, Fast Initial Link Setup (FILS) discovery messages, or the like.
