Abstract

Active-matrix flat-panel displays, such as AMOLED displays, can suffer from image retention, wherein faint traces (ghost images) of previously displayed images persist on the screen. Ghost images can persist for substantial periods of time after the display is turned off. This disclosure describes techniques to rapidly recover from image retention by controlling the device charging and/or display driving circuits. The techniques include one or more of displaying specific image patterns that cause a rapid fading of the retained image; adjusting the on-duty ratio of display pixels to achieve a black screen; turning on the screen with a black image thereby simulating a switched-off screen during charging; etc. The techniques mitigate image retention, resulting in improved display quality and user experience.
