Abstract

Techniques are presented herein that support identifying when an access point (AP) is used in such a way as to violate an environmental certification restriction. For example, if an AP is certified to only operate indoors, then that device should not be allowed to operate outdoors. In detecting an instance of a certification violation, aspects of the presented techniques may correlate temperature and atmospheric pressure sensor measurements from an AP with information from a weather service for a specific area; correlate data from an AP with data from one or more neighboring APs; periodically examine a neighboring network and wireless landscape to identify a change in an AP’s location; request environmental data from any joined clients; and leverage density information about a client’s type (such as car, commercial vehicle, etc.) or the number of visible service set identifiers (SSIDs).
